Pattison State Park, located just south of Superior, Wisconsin, is a natural wonderland offering stunning waterfalls, scenic hiking trails, and a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities. The park's main attractions are Big Manitou Falls, the highest waterfall in Wisconsin, and Little Manitou Falls, both formed by the Black River. The land that now comprises Pattison State Park was originally inhabited by Native American tribes. In the early 20th century, Martin Pattison, a wealthy lumberman and philanthropist, recognized the area's natural beauty and purchased the land to preserve it for public use. He donated the land to the state of Wisconsin in 1917, and Pattison State Park was officially established in 1920. The park's Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp during the 1930s left a lasting legacy, constructing many of the park's trails, buildings, and infrastructure. Visitors to Pattison State Park can enjoy a wide range of activities. Hiking is a popular option, with trails ranging from easy strolls to more challenging climbs. The Big Manitou Falls Trail offers breathtaking views of the waterfall, while the Interfalls Trail connects both Big and Little Manitou Falls. Other activities include camping, swimming in Interfalls Lake, fishing in the Black River, picnicking, and birdwatching. In the winter, the park transforms into a snowy playground, offering opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
Transportation
While there is no direct public transportation to Pattison State Park, you can reach it by car. From Superior, take Wisconsin Highway 35 south for approximately 13 miles. The park entrance will be on your left. Parking is available within the park.
